WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – Farmers in Whatcom County and across Washington State will be eligible for federal assistance for crops damaged by the summer’s extreme heat.

Representative Susan DelBene was among lawmakers urging the Agriculture Department to include them in a $10 billion disaster relief package already signed into law.

The 1st District Democrat says one berry farmer she’s talked to lost 84% of his crop to the heat, an estimated $232,000 in lost revenue.

Farmers who had crop insurance could see 90% of their losses covered while those without would get about 70% through the federal program.

Oyster growers are also among those who are eligible for federal assistance.
