WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – State Representative Sharon Shewmake has announced she’s running for state Senate.
The 42nd District Democratic State Representative says she’ll challenge Doug Ericksen for the Senate seat in the same district.
The position has proven elusive for Democrats.
Ericksen, a Republican from Ferndale, has held the seat for a decade after taking over for the retiring Dale Brandland.
But he may be vulnerable after winning re-election by just 46 votes in 2018.
Ericksen is currently in a Florida hospital recovering from COVID 19 after being medevacked from El Salvador.
Shewmake defeated Republican incumbent representative Vincent Buys in the 42nd District in 2018.
