BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The superintendent of Bellingham Schools tells families that they’re being extra diligent in assessing security in light of a series of recent threats.

Dr. Greg Baker says several schools have experienced threats delivered electronically or via social media that are believed to be unconnected.

“Our folks are working day and night to respond to every single situation. We’re working closely with our fabulous partners in the police department,” said Baker. “But it’s draining. And it takes a lot of resources. So, that’s where we’re at right now.”

Some messages on social media have been threatening over race, sexual orientation or sexual identity.

Electronic messages threatening violence against schools have also been received.

Classes at Sehome High School were cancelled Thursday, December 9th, after a threat led to a lockdown on Wednesday.

“I can just feel a bit of calmness. Our staff can work together and not focus on teaching for the day and bring in our partners,” said Baker. “I’m hopeful. It’s not something I wanted to do, but it’s the right thing to do in this situation.”

A financial reward is being offered for information leading to the identification of the person who made the threat against Sehome this week.

Baker says the school district is working closely with police to identify anyone making threats and federal law enforcement could become involved.
