LYNDEN, Wash. – The bitter cold is causing a host of issues for local heating companies.

“High efficiency furnaces have drains and they will tend to freeze,” said Bobbi Kreider, co-owner of Lynden Sheet Metal. “We’ve seen a lot of people, with the wind blowing so hard, that they’re not able to get their house up to temperature.”

Kreider told KGMI that they’re struggling to keep up with the demand for repairs.

But she added that there’s an easy way to prevent some winter-related damage.

“When the temperature gets this extreme do not turn you thermostat down at night,” said Kreider. “Just leave it at one setting. It’s easier for a system to maintain temperatures than it is to bring it up large temperature ranges in the morning.”

In addition to the high demand, Kreider said that a shortage of skilled workers is also causing longer wait times for customers.
