WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – Whatcom County home prices soared to new heights while the time homes were on the market shrank in 2021.
Troy Muljat of Bellingham-based Muljat Group Realtors says the median price of a home sold was more than $549,000.
That reflected a 24.3% increase over the 2020 median, more than double the percentage increase in any year since 2010.
The average time a home was on the market also plunged to just 25 days last year.
“High demand, low inventory and low interest rates kept Whatcom County’s housing market hot throughout the year,” Muljat said.
Bellingham still has the top median price in Whatcom County at $630,000, up 20.3%.
Muljat says the average Bellingham home sold for nearly 5% above its asking price and was on the market for just 17 days last year.
But the number of homes sold in Bellingham remained flat as it has for the past five years.
He says increases in homes sold were seen in the county’s smaller cities.
Ferndale saw 610 sales in 2021, up from 457 in 2018.
The Birch Bay/Blaine market had 426 sales last year, up from 356 in 2018.
The Mount Baker area saw a 38% increase in sales in 2021.
