SUMAS, Wash. – An international rail line in Sumas is now back in service.

November’s catastrophic flood damaged the rail line and toppled 15 rail cars that weighed 200,000 pounds apiece.

Ferndale-based Western Refinery Services jumped to work in late November, righted the rail cars, and hauled in more than 10,000 tons of rock to rebuild the line so BNSF could install new rail.

WRS’ Bill VanZanten says the flooding washed out the bridge over Johnson Creek, damaging over 1,200 feet of main line, and over 4,000 feet of the track were affected.

The repair work was completed on February 28th.
