SEATTLE, Wash. – UW Medicine researchers say the FDA’s approval of a second booster shot for those over 50 is a good next step, but not enough.
Dr. Anna Wald of the UW’s Virology Research Clinic says the current vaccines against COVID are good at keeping people out of the hospital, but aren’t proving to be very effective at preventing infection.
She says researchers are hoping to create a new generation of vaccines.
“One of them is looking at a booster that is based on a very strong T cell response.” said Wald. “The other study is looking at a combination of omicron and other variants to see whether you can broaden the immune response.”
She says a second booster shot should be somewhat effective, but wearing a mask in crowded indoor spaces is still a good idea.
