OLYMPIA, Wash. – The state Department of Health is warning residents to avoid oysters that were harvested from a specific area in British Columbia.

Oysters taken from BC’s Baynes Sound have sickened 26 people with norovirus in Washington.

Illnesses have been reported in Snohomish, King and Clark Counties and could be more widespread.

Retailers are being asked to stop selling the oysters and restaurants should confirm oysters they serve weren’t harvested in areas BC 14-8 or 14-15.

Symptoms of norovirus infection include vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, muscle aches, fever, and headache, and the illness is easily spread.
