BELLINGHAM, Wash. – An increase in outreach for Bellingham’s homeless population is on the way.
The Homeless Outreach Team, run by Opportunity Council’s Whatcom Homeless Service Center, will be increasing their operating hours beginning in June.
Lighthouse Mission Ministries also will be spending more time bringing help to people on the streets.
The Lighthouse Mission president told Cascadia Daily News that their Base Camp shelter has been nearly at capacity for the past month, an unusual occurrence for springtime.
Along with reaching out to unhoused people on the streets, Lighthouse Mission also plans to begin training programs for downtown employees in de-escalation techniques starting May 26th.
The non-profit organization is looking for more volunteers.
Anyone interested can apply on their website.
