WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – Candidates running in this year’s primary face a deadline of this Friday, May 20th, at 4:30 p.m. to file with the auditor’s office.

Here’s a look at hopefuls who have filed in the 42nd State District so far.

Three candidates are running for the State Senate position.

Republican Simon Sefzik was appointed to fulfill the late Doug Ericksen’s term last January.

He’s facing fellow Republican and Whatcom County Council member Ben Elenbaas and Democratic State Representative Sharon Shewmake.

Two Democrats, Joe Timmons and Richard May, and two Republicans, Dan Johnson and Kyle Christensen, are competing for the state House seat Shewmake is vacating.

In the other 42nd District House race, Republicans Kamal Bhachu and Tawsha Thompson are challenging incumbent Democrat Alicia Rule.

The top two vote getters in each race will advance to the November general election.
