BELLINGHAM, Wash. – An Alberta, Canada man was caught while trying to smuggle more than a half-ton of meth into Canada with a small boat.
The U.S. Attorney in Seattle says the crew of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection patrol vessel spotted the 18-foot speedboat riding low in the water near Stuart Island Wednesday, May 25th.
They stopped the boat and the man on board pulled back a cover to expose a number of locked duffle bags.
Border search authority allowed the crew to cut open a bag and they found shrink-wrapped packages of what looked like methamphetamine.
The man, 51-year-old Ted Karl Faupel, was taken into custody and the boat was towed to the Coast Guard Station in Bellingham.
Over 1400 pounds of meth were found in 28 duffle bags on the boat.
