OTTAWA, Canada – Tragedy on this side of the border is prompting the Canadian government to establish new restrictions on guns.

KING 5 reports Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government introduced legislation this week that would freeze importing, buying or selling handguns.

The handgun restrictions are expected to be adopted this fall.

Canada is already moving ahead with a ban and buy-back program for military-style weapons.

Trudeau says the handgun limits were prompted by recent mass shootings in Uvalde, Texas and Buffalo, New York.

Canada’s minister of emergency preparedness says owning a gun in Canada is considered a privilege, not a right.
