TAIPEI, Taiwan – U.S. Congresswoman Suzan DelBene from Washington’s 1st District was with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as she made a contentious visit to Taiwan on Tuesday, August 2nd.
Pelosi says the trip is to show support for Taiwan’s democracy and its 23 million residents.
DelBene says Taiwan is one of Washington’s top trading partners.
China had warned Pelosi and her delegation to stay away from the territory it claims, but which has been independent of the mainland since the late 1940’s.
A University of Washington expert on China tells KIRO that he doesn’t think DelBene’s involvement in the trip will affect the state’s trade with China.
