BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Whatcom Transportation Authority is taking a big step closer to its goal of having a zero-emission bus fleet by 2040.
U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen announced last Thursday, July 11th, a grant of $8.9 million has been approved by the Federal Transportation Administration to replace eight Whatcom diesel buses with new electric ones.
The Bellingham Herald reports the money will also go towards building charging stations for the new vehicles.
WTA board chairman and member of the Bellingham City Council Michael Lillliquist celebrated the grant, saying it removes the last major hurdle towards making the long-term plan of lesser-polluting buses a reality.
