SAN JUAN ISLANDS, Wash. – The Coast Guard and other agencies continue the recovery of a sunken fishing boat off the west coast of San Juan Island.

They’ve been monitoring a diesel fuel sheen that appeared just after the Aleutian Isle sank Saturday afternoon, but no sheen was visible on Wednesday, August 17th.

More than 3,800 feet of absorbent boom has been placed in the area as a precaution.

The boat is under about 200 feet of water, which will require divers to use special gas mixtures to breathe and a decompression chamber when they resurface.

A Remote Operated Device has been brought in to help evaluate the condition of the ship.

Whale advocacy groups are watching for Southern Resident Orcas and are prepared to respond if they approach the area.
