BELLINGHAM, Wash.- Washington’s Department of Natural Resources are calling for help from residents in preventing wildfires this upcoming Labor Day weekend.

The DNR acknowledges that the 445 fires so far this year are the lowest registered in the last decade, but warn that the hot and dry conditions of this past week, along with more of the same forecasted this weekend, have Fire Danger Ratings ranging from High to Extreme throughout the state.

Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz released a statement Thursday, September 1th reminding the public that the Labor Day weekend in 2020 saw more than 500,000 acres burned, warning that a single spark in the right conditions can make or break an entire fire season.
