OLYMPIA, Wash. – Residents in Pierce and Thurston Counties are gearing up to prevent a new airport from landing there.

Forecasts show that Washington travelers could overwhelm the state’s existing airports by 2050.

The legislature created the Commercial Aviation Coordinating Commission in 2019 to find a site for a new commercial airport.

They’re zeroed in on two sites in Pierce County and another in Thurston County.

KIRO reports some Pierce County residents concerned about a lack of transit and effects on the environment attended a meeting on Monday.

Another group has formed to oppose the proposed site east of Olympia in Thurston County.
