BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Some people have been misusing and abusing Bellingham’s Sehome Hill Arboretum.

The Parks and Recreation Department says the Arboretum is managed as a pristine natural area for hiking, nature study and other low impact activities.

Director Nicole Oliver says it’s one of the few areas in the city where bikes are prohibited, but some are ignoring the rule.

Graffiti has become a big problem with people tagging rock outcroppings, signs and the observation tower.

Structures have been built in trees and campfires have been found in the woods, including one that required the fire department to respond.

The city is asking everyone to stay on trails and observe other rules in the Arboretum, and to report any improper activities.

And people interested in becoming a park steward can find a link to volunteer on the City’s website.
