VANCOUVER, B.C. – (KGMI.com) Canadian rescuers are reminding people to be cautious when using certain apps to navigate the great outdoors.
North Shore Rescue says that a hiker called for help after following a trail on Google Maps towards Fromme Mountain north of Vancouver, B.C.
The path that the man followed did not contain any trails and led up to the mountain’s steep backside.
Helicopter and rope rescue crews were able to get the hiker off the mountain, despite low clouds that almost prevented rescuers from reaching the area.
North Shore Rescue adds that this is the third mission they have had to make on that side of the mountain, one of which ended in a fatality.
They remind people not to solely rely on Google Maps or other phone-based navigation apps if they plan on taking a hike.
Instead, they recommend people use apps that are specifically designed for outdoor trails such as CalTopo or Gaia GPS.
