BELLINGHAM, WASH. – A lot of people support a proposal for a controversial homeless shelter in a city-owned building on Bellingham’s waterfront.

Many testified at last night’s city council meeting.

The shelter would displace five maritime-related businesses.

Several people say that’s a step in the wrong direction.

The city would partner with the Lighthouse Mission, which would need to raise $1.5 million to make it happen.

The Port of Bellingham could still possibly nix the deal because it has an option to buy the property.

The city council decided to hold off on moving forward until after the Port Commission’s next meeting.

Jim Kyle, the President of the Working Waterfront Coalition of Whatcom County, spoke with Peter and Tracy on Your Afternoon Show about the project.
