BELFAIR, WASH. (AP) – The niece of a Belfair man charged with first-degree murder speaks out after police say he shot and killed a man in a shower on his property.

Bruce Fanning’s niece Christal Farster says she’s shocked.

“[It] was just the wrong place at the wrong time. I know my uncle, he protects, so I know he wouldn’t have done anything unless he did feel threatened. I just feel really bad for the family that lost someone they loved,” Farster says.

Fanning, 59, is charged in the death of 31-year-old Nathaniel Rosa of Bothell.

Court documents say Fanning saw Rosa in the shower, went to another building, got a gun, came back and shot Rosa three times.

Fanning told detectives he was afraid and thought Rosa was drunk.

Prosecutors say Rosa was staying at a nearby home and might have mistakenly entered Fanning’s building.
