OLYMPIA, WASH. (AP) – The State House in Olympia passed a measure that would create a two-tiered licensing system that seeks to bring Washington state in line with federal identification requirements.

Q-13 talked with Representative Judy Clibborn, who sponsored the legislation that aims to make changes before a January deadline.

“We have an answer that meets the federal purposes, and let’s just be calm about it,” Clibborn says.

The Senate passed the bill in February, but the House made changes, so the legislation is back in the Senate.

More negotiation is expected before a final bill is passed.

The measure being considered would keep the state’s current enhanced license and would mark standard state licenses as not valid for federal purposes.

That means you would need a more expensive enhanced license or other approved government ID to board any flight starting next year.
