OLYMPIA, WASH. – Senator Patty Murray is challenging the president’s proposed cuts to the National Institutes of Health.
She says the cuts would devastate critical medical research in Seattle and across the country.
“Here, in our region, it will have a huge impact, not only on those researchers, but we will lose their research to other countries or lose it all together,” Murray says.
White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney says the cuts are needed.
“We think we can run the government more efficiently than the previous administration, and we think we can run the government with fewer people than the previous administration,” Mulvaney says.
But it’s unclear how much of the president’s budget cuts Congress will agree to.
