BELLINGHAM, WASH. – The Whatcom County Council had to decide Tuesday night whether to continue a building ban on lots served by small exempt wells.
During the meeting, the Council heard from members of the public who voiced concerns about water usage as well those who own land that can’t be developed.
The Council voted to extend the moratorium, which is the result of the State Supreme Court ruling known as the “Hirst Decision.”
Republican State Senator Mark Schoesler says the legislature needs to act.
“A family from Bellingham, standing next to a well on property they can’t build their home on, [should] be enough to motivate us,” Schoesler says.
The county also hopes the legislature does something before the session ends.
