BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Peacehealth St. Joseph Medical Center tops a list of the biggest employers in Whatcom County.

The hospital employs just over 2,100 people.

The list was put out by the Center for Economic and Business Research at Western Washington University.

Next is Lummi Nation at almost 1,800 employees, followed by Western with 1,500 and Bellingham Public Schools with almost 1,000 workers.

The largest private for-profit sector employers are the BP Cherry Point refinery, Fred Meyer, Haggen and Zodiac Aerospace.

The Bellingham Herald quotes the Center’s Jerry McCafferty as saying having a hospital and schools near at the top of the list is pretty typical for an area like Whatcom County.
