BELLINGHAM, Wash – If you get a phone call saying a family member is being held hostage after a car crash, it’s a scam.

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s office says two local people were targeted Friday with calls from the 503 (Portland, Oregon) area code.

Callers in two separate instances demanded money for the return of the supposedly abducted family members.

In one case, the victim bought a $4500 Western Union MoneyGram , but never transmitted it.

In both cases, victims contacted their family members and confirmed they were OK.

The Sheriff’s office reminds you to never give out personal information over the phone, especially when the call was unsolicited.
