HANFORD, Wash. (AP) – Energy Secretary Rick Perry is now up to speed on the collapse of an underground railroad tunnel in Hanford where nuclear waste is stored.
Spokesperson Destry Henderson says it happened at the deactivated Plutonium Uranium Extraction Facility.
“The soil that collapsed covers one of the tunnels that accesses the facility.”
The Department of Energy says no one was hurt today and there is no release of radioactive material.
The agency says it is too early to say what caused the cave-in.
Governor Inslee says the safety of Hanford’s 9,000 employees is the top priority.
