EVERETT, Wash. – Snohomish County has agreed to pay Republican Representative John Koster $585,000.

The payout is to settle a free-speech lawsuit.

The Daily Herald reports Koster was fired as the county ombudsman in 2014 after he signed onto a fundraising letter for the conservative Freedom Foundation.

Some Democratic elected officials say the letter compromised Koster’s neutrality as ombudsman.

The county does not admit any wrongdoing.
