BELLINGHAM, WASH. – The Whatcom County Council votes 6-1 to adopt amendments to the Cherry Point growth plan.

Barbara Brenner was the lone dissenting vote.

Before Tuesday night’s meeting, hundreds attended a rally hosted by several Whatcom County conservative business groups on the Bellingham Library lawn.

They then headed to the courthouse for the council’s public hearing on revisions to Cherry Point’s growth plan.

They say the changes, aimed at protecting the environment, will hurt the refineries and other businesses at Cherry Point.

But many people support the proposed modifications, saying they help protect the environment and will create new jobs.

The county says the new policies would not impact the current operations at Cherry Point.
