OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) – Even with all the rain and snow we had over the winter, Public Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz says this fire season will be longer and hotter than what we’re used to.
“The challenge is, is there is this false sense of security in our communities and even with our legislature that believes that because of all that rain and snow pack, that we’re not going to see the kinds of fire seasons that we saw in 2014, 2015, and 2016.”
Franz says, counting the fire earlier this week near Leavenworth, there have been more than 20 wildfires in the state this month.
She says the extra rain and snow over the winter will only mean more fuel for the fires this season.
