BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The size of a new Whatcom County jail continues to be a serious hang-up for local elected officials.
Some want more than 500 beds, while others would like to see less than 400.
County Executive Jack Louws just wants his council to act.
“We’re still in a race against the cost escalation of construction with every day that passes. Our current facility, as you are aware, needs replacement for the safety of staff and residents. I ask that you act expediently.” Louws says.
After hours of discussion Tuesday the County Council sent a proposal to the cities for a 427 to 453 bed jail.
They also made the highly unusual decision to hold a public hearing on that proposal, which won’t change regardless of what they hear from the public.
If all the city councils come to an agreement, the proposal will be on the November ballot.
