BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Bellingham City Council isn’t ready to decide yet on a new Whatcom County Jail.
The County Council sent the city a proposal for a 427 to 453 bed jail.
The city council hit the pause button.
“…Table our decision on the facilities use agreement til after the county has a hearing.”
The hearing City Council President Michael Lilliquist is referring to came from an unusual County Council action.
County Councilmembers decided to hold a public hearing on the plan it sent to Bellingham and the other cities after the fact.
Regardless of what they hear from the public, that proposal won’t change.
However, it will allow the City Council to hear what the public has to say before it makes a decision.
