OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) The federal government won’t give Washington much extra time to implement its new ID program.
Even though the state Department of Licensing asked for an extension to comply with federal requirements for state driver’s licenses and ID cards through October 2020, the agency says the feds will only grant an extension through July 10.
The federal REAL ID Act requires states to issue drivers licenses and ID cards with security enhancements and only to people who can show they’re in the country legally.
State lawmakers passed a two-tiered licensing system this year that was signed into law by Governor Jay Inslee.
