LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — The International Olympic Committee says it has formally proposed picking the 2024 and 2028 Olympic host cities at the same time this year.

Los Angeles and Paris now seem certain to both be awarded a Summer Games in September as the IOC tries to safeguard its signature event for the next decade.

A widely expected proposal from the IOC executive board on Friday did not address which city will go first and stage the 2024 Olympics.

A meeting of the full IOC membership from July 11-12 in Lausanne can ratify the board’s request. That should set up a vote on Sept. 13 in Lima, Peru, to confirm the hosting order.

Paris and L.A. bid leaders could agree how to split the games in the coming weeks.

3-on-3 basketball added to 2020 Tokyo Olympic program

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — The IOC has added 3-on-3 basketball as an Olympic event for the 2020 Tokyo Games.

In another move toward urban youth sports, BMX Freestyle cycling will join the Olympic program for the first time among a “net increase of 15 events.”

However, the IOC says there will be 285 fewer athlete places than in 2016.

Track cycling will add men’s and women’s madison races, and swimming will add men’s 800-meter freestyle and women’s 1,500 freestyle.

IOC President Thomas Bach says the 2020 Games will become “more youthful, more urban and will include more women.”

Mixed gender medal events rise to 18 from nine.

Events confirmed Friday are in addition to decisions last August to include sports climbing, skateboarding, surfing, baseball and softball, and karate to the Tokyo program.

IOC warns weightlifting it risks Olympic ouster over doping

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — The IOC has warned weightlifting to curb doping or risk being dropped from the 2024 Olympics.

IOC President Thomas Bach says the International Weightlifting Federation must “address the massive doping problem this sport is facing.”

Bach says the IOC executive board asked the federation for a “satisfactory report” on the issue by December.

Weightlifting’s doping problem was shown with 49 positive tests so far, most involving steroids, in reanalysis of samples from the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2012 London Olympics. The IOC has stripped 29 weightlifting medals from those games.

The sport is safe in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics lineup, though with 64 fewer athletes and one fewer men’s weight class than at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.
