SEATTLE, Wash. – Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that shortstop Jean Segura has returned from rehab and been activated from AAA Tacoma. Infielder Tyler Smith was optioned to Tacoma.
Segura, 27, hit .125 with 2 runs during 2 rehab games with AAA Tacoma. He was placed on the disabled list after being removed from the June 1 game against Colorado in the top of the 5th inning. He was hitting .341 with 29 runs, 10 doubles, 4 home runs, 20 RBI, a .391 on-base percentage and an .852 OPS in 43 games with Seattle this season.
Smith, 25 (turns 26 July 1), is batting .188 with 2 runs, 1 double, 1 RBI, 1 walk and a .263 on-base percentage in 10 games with Seattle this season. Smith recorded his first MLB hit in his first at-bat, doubling on June 2 against Tampa Bay. He recorded a multi-hit game June 12 at Minnesota, going 2-for-5.
