BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University sophomore elected Associated Students vice president of governmental affairs is being denied her office.

KING-5 reports Ana Ramirez was brought to the United States as child and is currently in the country illegally.

“The rules always need to be changed. The system was not created for someone like me and other undocumented students to be here, and that needs to change.”

Since the vice president post is a paid position, it’s considered a job that can only be done by people with legal status.

Ramirez applied to be part of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, but hasn’t heard back yet.
