BELLINGHAM, Wash – Bellingham police officers are handing out more than citations nowadays, they’re also handing out Slurpee coupons.

KIRO-TV reports the department and 7-eleven teamed up to reach kids of families who may have never had positive interaction with police.

“When we used to go up by their housing developments we used to get a lot of long looks, and now kids literally chase our cars asking for candy and stickers and stuff like that.”

Bellingham Police Officer Josh Danke says kids may initially be afraid of an approaching police officer, but once they show them the coupon, their attitudes change.
