MOUNT VERNON, Wash- A 16 year old boy has been sentenced to over seven years in connection with the shooting of Mount Vernon Police officer Mike “Mick” McClaughry last December.

The Skagit Valley Herald reportsĀ  Austin Gonzales was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty as an adult to three counts of assault, including two with a firearm.

Gonzales will serve his sentence in juvenile detention until he turns 18, then he will be transferred to prison.

Members of Gonzales’ family spoke with McClaughry before the sentencing, and McClaughry expressed regret at the pain the Gonzales family was feeling as a result of the teen’s actions.
