NOOKSACK, Wash. – A fire burning on Sumas Mountain that began Sunday night covered about an acre and a half by Monday morning.
Washington State Department of Natural Resources says firefighters hope to have it contained later Monday.
Crews were first dispatched for a smoke investigation around 7:45 p.m. Sunday on Paradise Valley Road off South Pass Road east of Everson.
Janet Pearce, spokeswoman for the Department of Natural Resources says they’re investigating the possibility that fireworks started the fire.
Lynden resident Olivia Swedelius was on Sumas Mountain as the fire began, and told KGMI she saw a pickup truck leaving the area at a high rate of speed just before she and her boyfriend stumbled on the fire in is early stages.
