BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Crews have started the long process of cleaning up the Harris Avenue Shipyard site as part of a legal agreement between the Port of Bellingham and the state Department of Ecology.
More than 11,000 cubic yards of sediment and soil contaminated with heavy metals and PCBs among other contaminants is being removed, along with a wood building and creosote-treated pier.
The project focuses on a portion of the site and is set to finish in 2019, while a plan for the rest of the site is expected in the next two years.
This is one of 12 cleanup sites around Bellingham Bay that are part of a coordinated effort by federal, tribal, state and local governments to clean up contamination, control pollution sources and restore habitat.
