STEILACOOM, Wash. – Human error caused an Amtrak passenger train to derail in our state.

Some of the 267 passengers had minor injuries in the Sunday derailment in Steilacoom.

An Amtrak spokeswoman says the train failed to slow down as it approached a drawbridge, activating a special switch designed to avoid a catastrophe if the drawbridge is open.

The train’s engineer was removed from his post.
