SEATTLE, Wash. (AP) – Seattle’s wealthiest would be the only state residents to pay an income tax under a measure approved by the Seattle City Council.
It voted to impose a 2.25% tax on the city’s highest earners – individuals who make over $250,000 and couples who bring in $500,000.
The measure is certain to face a court challenge from opponents who call the tax proposal illegal.
A state law passed in 1984 prohibits counties and cities from levying taxes on income.
