BELLINGHAM, Wash. – It’s looking like a proposal for a new Whatcom County Jail will be on the November ballot.
Monday night, the Bellingham City Council signed-off on a jail agreement with the County, despite hearing from several people opposed to the new jail.
The County Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday on putting a tax increase to pay for a new lockup on the November Ballot.
Councilmembers gave preliminary approval at their last meeting.
The proposal would ask voters to raise the local sales tax two-tenths-of-a-percent to build a jail with about 450 beds on Labounty Drive in Ferndale.
