BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) – Is there a demand for coal ports like the one planned for Whatcom County that’s now dead?
US coal exports rose sharply early this year because of more demand in Asia and Europe, but it’s not all good news for the coal industry.
The increase comes after five years of declines.
Exports were up most significantly through ports in Seattle, Norfolk, and New Orleans.
But, volumes remain well below industry expectations when plans were announced to build coal ports in Washington and three other states.
Most of those projects have stalled or been cancelled like the Gateway Pacific Terminal proposed for Cherry Point.
