FERNDALE, Wash. – The state Department of Ecology is fining the Intalco Aluminum smelter in Ferndale for emissions violations.

The department says the Alcoa plant violated its air quality permit as the plant was restarted in June 2016.

Workers had been shutting down the plant until a power agreement was reached with the Bonneville Power Association that allowed the restart.

Part of the $32,500 fine is also for emissions following a fire in a bake oven that happened last November.
