LYNDEN, Wash – We’re getting new information on the death of a Mexican worker at a Sumas Farm that contradicts statements from representatives of the farm workers.
The company hasn’t responded to our requests for comment, but the chief administrative officer did send the Lynden Tribune a statement.
He says Honesto Silva Ibarra was diabetic and his nephew told management he became sick after running out of medicine.
The company called an ambulance and took the nephew to the hospital to be with his uncle.
When Silva was flown to Harborview in Seattle, he says they took the nephew to Seattle and contacted Silva’s wife.
The company says he died from complications related to diabetes.
The CAO in the statement to the Lynden Tribune, says the company paid to send the the nephew and Silva’s body to Mexico.
He says no other employees reported illnesses or complained about working conditions.
That’s a much different story from what representatives of the workers told us and other media outlets.
