LYNDEN, Wash – A dangerous new bug is threatening Whatcom County’s corn crop.
A Western Corn Rootworm infestation has exploded in Whatcom County’s corn crop, which is grown mostly for feed.
The pest has been called one of the most devastating corn rootworm species in North America, in part due to its high rate of reproduction.
Lance Honcoop of Elenbaas Agronomy in Lynden says the focus is on stopping the bug this year, to prevent an epidemic next year.
Honcoop says some local growers are not yet aware of the infestation.
Hear an interview with Honcoop, an agronomist with Elenbaas Agronomy, about how to find this bug, and plans for stopping it here.
