BENTON COUNTY, Wash. (AP) – U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry made his first visit to the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, which has been plagued by a series of problems recently.
For decades, Hanford made plutonium for nuclear weapons. Now it is engaged in a massive cleanup of nuclear waste.
Perry told KEPR it will take decades to finish the work. “This is a long project,” Perry said. “But we want to do it as efficiently, we want to do it as timely, we want to do it as safely as we can. ”
Perry promised to visit Hanford during his confirmation hearing.
Accidents in May and June released some radiation, but no workers were hurt.
