BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Whatcom County stores are continuing to have success selling their wares.

Retail sales are up 8.8 percent locally in the first quarter, as compared to the same time a year earlier.

Some of the largest growth came in the border cities of Lynden, Blaine and Sumas, which experienced a combined average increase of about 14 percent.

Statewide, steady growth in construction and car sales helped boost sales by 5.3 percent.
