TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Brandon Dawkins accounted for three touchdowns and Arizona ran for 506 yards to open the season with a 62-24 victory over Northern Arizona. Arizona struggled to slow the FCS Lumberjacks and sputtered on offense in the first quarter before coming alive. The Wildcats fell just short of the school rushing record of 511 yards set against Arizona State in the 2016 season finale.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ronald Jones II rushed for the tiebreaking 37-yard touchdown with 6:57 to play, and No. 4 Southern California rallied from a second-half deficit for a 49-31 victory over Western Michigan. Jones rushed for 159 yards and three scores, while freshman Stephen Carr added 69 yards rushing and two TDs in his debut for the Trojans. Marvell Tell returned an interception 37 yards for a TD with 3:13 to play as USC won its 10th consecutive game despite major trouble from the defending MAC champion Broncos.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Royce Freeman ran for 150 yards and four touchdowns and Oregon routed Southern Utah 77-21 on Saturday in Willie Taggart’s debut as the Ducks’ head coach. Kani Benoit ran for three more touchdowns and Oregon set an Autzen Stadium record with nine rushing scores. It was the seventh straight year that the Ducks have opened the season with a victory.
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Isaiah Hodgins caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Jake Luton with about a minute left as Oregon State came back to defeat FCS-member Portland State 35-32. Luton threw for 235 yards, one TD and one interception and had six completions in a row on the last drive for the Beavers (1-1), who bounced back from a season-opening loss at Colorado State.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Ross Bowers threw for 363 yards and four touchdowns in his first college start, helping California beat North Carolina 35-30 in the Golden Bears’ first game under Justin Wilcox. Bowers, a sophomore, had never thrown a pass in a college game and had to win a preseason battle for the starting job.
